Michael Hanrahan – Principal / Director / Chartered Accountant

Michael is the principal and the director of Hanrahans Accounting Services Pty Limited, the accounting arm of the hanrahans group and a Chartered Accounting practice established more than 13 years ago. The practice employs qualified accountants with various expertises in areas of accounting, auditing, taxation and litigation support.

Michael is a Chartered Accountant holding a Public Practice Certificate issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and has approximately 28 years experience as a practising accountant. He is also a Registered Tax Agent, a Registered Company Auditor and a Justice of the Peace.

Michael was educated in Sydney University where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Economics (Majors in Economics and Accountancy). In 1978 he commenced employment as an accountant in the Audit Division of Coopers and Lybrand (now part of PWC) and worked in various positions there for five years. He subsequently joined a small business specialist accounting practice as a partner for 10 years before establishing his own practice.

In the course of his professional career Michael has had extensive experience in preparing accounts and income tax returns for companies, partnerships, trusts, superannuation funds, sole traders and high net worth individuals. He has advised clients in relation to incomes tax, capital gains tax, financial management issues, asset restructuring strategies, financial planning, finance and capital raising and various other financial matters.

Michael also has over 20 years experience in business advisory and litigation support assignments, and has acted as an expert witness in courts in respect of these matters.

Michael became a member of the ICAA in 1982, was elected a Fellow of the ICAA in 1993 and recently celebrated 25 years membership as a Chartered Accountant. Michael is also a former spokesperson for small business for the ICAA.

Michael maintains a healthy balance of work, family and exercise. In his free time he enjoys undertaking various endurance based sporting activities.

Charlie Rao - Senior Manager / Chartered Accountant

Charlie Rao - Senior Manager

Charlie joined hanrahans in 2000 and has been a Senior Manager with our firm since 2003 with a wide range of responsibilities including providing high level technical advice, training and support to the principal, staff and clients.

Charlie is a high achiever with a very impressive academic record. Originally trained as an engineer, Charlie has higher degrees including a PhD from the Australian National University. He also completed postgraduate studies in Professional Accounting at Macquarie University with top grades in all subjects. He is the proud recipient of a prestige ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Australian Research Council and received a merit award for his outstanding achievement in the Strategic Business Management module of the CA Program run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA).

Prior to his career change to focus on public accounting and business services, Charlie was a Senior Research Fellow involved in various types of research projects and university teaching. It was his keen interest in the commercialisation of research outcomes that lead him to move further into commerce and the business world. With over 7 years experience in public accounting practice, Charlie has gained extensive expertises in almost all facets of accounting, taxation and business advisory.

Apart from his role as an in-house technical specialist, Charlie has provided client services in diverse areas including: general accounting and compliance, auditing of various entities, provision of taxation planning and advice, business valuation and economic loss assessment, business and investment structures, business planning and financing, estate planning and succession planning, as well as litigation support for various matters such as tax disputes, family law, commercial disputes and personal injury.

Charlie is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia. He is also a member of the special interest group of business valuation and forensic accounting of the ICAA.

Charlie is a father of two young boys and has a strong interest in technological advancements and their impact on business. At leisure times he enjoys reading, music and outdoor travel. He is also a keen investor and has been building his personal investment portfolio for many years.

Charlie migrated to Australia almost 20 years ago and can speak fluent English as well as his native Chinese languages, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Hamish Kirk – Senior Chartered Accountant

Hamish joined Hanrahans in 2009. He specialises in superannuation, financial reporting, audit and taxation planning services.  Hamish has a unique background which combines a commercial savvy mindset with strong interpersonal and technical skills.  He utilises this experience to support and mentor our graduate and assistant accountants.

Hamish was educated in New Zealand where he graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Business Studies with a major in Accountancy from Massey University. He has Dual Membership as a Chartered Accountant of both The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA).

Prior to becoming an accountant, Hamish gained experience working in a variety of fields including counselling and problem resolution, financial planning, debt collection, debt management and book keeping.  His background gives him valuable insight into the everyday pressures of life, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to find solutions to complex problems outside of ‘just the numbers’ of businesses.

Hamish started his accounting career in 2000 and then moved to Christchurch, New Zealand where he joined a medium sized Chartered Accounting practice in 2001. Since migrating to Australia in 2005, he has gained extensive experience in Australian financial and management accounting, audit, superannuation and taxation planning.

Hamish gained his management accounting experience in 2005 and 2006 and was head hunted from his initial Chartered Accounting position to become the Finance Manager to a Financial Services company employing over 700 people. There he managed a team of 5 accounting staff and the responsibilities of two major restructures. After a successful period with that company, Hamish made the decision to become a full member of the ICAA and in 2007 Hamish moved back into the Chartered Accountancy environment.

This shift allowed him to further sharpen his technical skills in superannuation, financial reporting, audit and taxation planning services. He was promoted to Practice Manager of a chartered Accounting Practice in 2008 and became a full member of the ICAA in 2009.

Hamish happily lives in Sydney with his teenage daughter and enjoys spending time with his family and friends as well as interests in rugby union, photography, music golf and cricket.

Robert Ayre – Senior Accountant / Client Manager

Robert Ayre – Senior Accountant

Bob started his career in various Public Accounting Practices, where he gained qualifications and extensive practical experience in accounting and taxation.

Seeking to broaden his commercial experience, Bob accepted a position as a Financial Accountant in a private company with a turnover in excess of $100 million. With a team of 2 accountants and 21 clerical staff, he was responsible for the preparation of monthly financial reports for 43 branches throughout Australia and a weekly payroll of over 2,000 employees.

Bob gained valuable management experiences when offered the position of General Manager for NSW in an Australian subsidiary of a US communication company with a turnover in excess of $45 million, he was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Australian company and remained on the Board until the Australian operations were taken over.

In 2002 Bob joined hanrahans and was impressed with the firm’s philosophy on management accounting and business planning for clients’ growth and development.

Bob is a very experienced and hands on accountant. He specialises in simplifying management reporting for our business clients.

Being an excellent communicator, Bob has the responsibilities of looking after the accounting and reporting needs of a number of large groups, as well as providing business consulting services to a wide range of business clients.

Peggy Au-Yeung – Senior Accountant / Certified Practicing Accountant

Peggy started with Hanrahans in late 2011. She is a qualified member of both CPA Australia and Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  Peggy completed her bachelor degree majoring in Accountancy at Wollongong University. In 2007, she graduated from the Australian School of Business with a Graduate Diploma of Management.
 
After graduating, she commenced her career in audit with mid-tier chartered accounting firms in Hong Kong for over five years.
 
After relocating to Sydney in 2002, she worked in business services with chartered accounting firms and has worked in various commercial roles. Peggy has developed experience in financial management reporting, budgeting, cashflow forecasting and project feasibility work. She has extensive experience in business services, accounting and taxation matters for companies, partnerships, trusts and superannuation funds.
 
In her spare time, Peggy enjoys going out with friends and family, going to the gym, swimming and enjoys all types of outdoor activities.

Shaun Thiyagalingam - Accountant

Shaun Thiyagalingam - Assistant Accountant

Shaun joined Hanrahans after graduating from  Bachelor of Business degree majoring in Accounting & Finance.

Shaun's current roles include preparing accounts, tax returns and audit work.

Furthering his endeavour to become a Chartered Accountant, Shaun has commenced the CA program run by the institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and is supported by Michael and Charlie as his mentor and manager respectively.

Eleanor Hanrahan – Financial Planner/Accountant

Eleanor has been with Hanrahans since early 2006 as an accountant. Since completing her university degree majoring in Accounting and Financial Planning with a minor in Marketing, she has decided to focus on her passion of Financial Planning.

Eleanor along with Michael runs the financial planning division of our practice. At Hanrahans financial planning we provide a comprehensive financial planning service which gives clients clarity to meet their financial goals.

This includes developing customised portfolio solutions, which involves taking the risk preference, tax situation and lifetime objectives of each individual investor into account.

We provide a wide range of financial services which underpins our strategy of planning, protecting and helping our clients prosper.

Cathy Chung - Graduate Accountant

Cathy holds a Masters degree in Accounting at Macquarie University, NSW in 2009 and has completed all six segments in the CPA Program.

Cathy has enrolled in the Mentor Program of CPA Australia and on completion will be a Certified Practicing Accountant.

Cathy elected to commence her career at Hanrahans and became part of the team in early 2010.

As a Graduate Accountant, Cathy works closely with the other Accountants and her main tasks are clients’ compliance work including year end accounts and income tax returns. She is progressively involved in the broader areas of the accounting practice and wishes to broaden her audit experience.

Jakaria Mostofa (Jack) - Junior Accountant

Jack commenced with Hanrahans in October 2011 working as a junior accountant.

He completed the Advanced Diploma of Accounting at the Australian Institute of Commerce and Language after arriving in Australia.

Jack travelled to Australia from Bangladesh in 2008 to further his studies and is currently completing his Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting.

Jack’s role is general accounting work and assists the accountants in their preparation of accounts and tax returns.


Jack’s goal is to become a Chartered Accountant.  He works part time at Hanrahans and is a keen movie-goer and enjoys listening to music

Melissa Addis - Bookkeeper / MYOB support specialist

Melissa Addis has been with hanrahans for eight years. She is a qualified bookkeeper with TAFE certification and is a registered MYOB expert.

Melissa is the bookkeeper for the practice. She specialises in MYOB and her role includes duties such as onsite bookkeeping, payroll and BAS.

Melissa also acts as the “In house accountant” for a number of large and small clients.

Melissa has two young children and enjoys spending time at the beach with her family.

Pam Floyd - Office Manager and Personal Assistant

Pam is our Office Manager and Personal Assistant to the principal, Michael Hanrahan.

Pam commenced in November 2008 after working for KPMG for over 20 years.

She has a broad knowledge of the administrative functions required for an accounting firm and is in charge of the general day to day running of the office.

Pam is in charge of first impressions and clients are assured of her warm, competent manner and common sense approach.

In her spare time Pam is a Civil Marriage Celebrant.

Jeannette Cefai - Administration Assistant

Jeannette is our Administration Assistant to the Office Manager and the principal, Michael Hanrahan.

Jeannette commenced in January 2011 after working as a Finance Manager for over 10 years in the telecommunications industry.

She has extensive experience in all areas of administration and provides ongoing support to the team at Hanrahans.

Her background has provided Jeannette with the skills, knowledge and organisational ability in working with the accountants in managing their workflow on a daily basis.

Clients are reassured by Jeannette’s competent manner and meticulous attitude to detail.

Jeannette has a young child and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Susan Hanrahan - Practice Manager

Susan is our Practice Manager. She is responsible for all staff matters and oversees the general day to day running of the practice. Her main responsibility is monitoring cash flow within the practice and dealing with the financial matters that arise.

 
Susan is a qualified Radiation Therapist and worked in this field for 15 years. She has a background in management within the public hospital system.

 
Susan commenced part-time work with hanrahans in 1993 and, together with the principal, has been instrumental in the successful growth of the business over the years.

 
Susan is the mother of three young adults. She has a keen interest in share trading, property management and investment.
